The University of Hawaii Board of Regents elected Big Island resident Alapaki Nahale-a as its new chair during a special meeting on July 6. The term runs for one year, but Nahale-a will serve as a regent until 2028.
The board is responsible for formulating policy as well as oversight of the management and operations of the 10-campus UH system.
“I am very honored the regents have faith in me to play that important role,” Nahale-a said in a press release. “I am excited about our collection of regents and their array of experience, a lot of public service, and they clearly care about the University of Hawaii. It’s going to be a great group to be a part of.”
Regents Gabriel Lee of Honolulu and Ernest Wilson of Maui also were appointed to vice chairs and will serve a term from July 2023 to June 2024.
The next Board of Regents meeting is scheduled for July 20.
